Flipping the bird! 
It may be unintentional (my imagination), but the lower, hunched figure's pocket full of pencils seems to be gesturing obscenely at the burden of the rooster. 
This piece is quite open to interpretation; it seems like there are multiple burdens at play. Very intriguing composition.
